Description
A quick and gourmet dish featuring seared ahi tuna steaks marinated in a flavorful mix of soy sauce, sesame oil, and honey, ready in just six minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 ahi tuna (yellowfin tuna) steaks (about 4 oz. each, 1 inch thick)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (preferably low sodium)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 tablespoon oil (canola, olive, or other high-heat oil)
- Green onions (for garnish)
- Toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
- Lime wedges (for serving)
Instructions
- Pat the ahi tuna steaks dry with a paper towel. Place the steaks on a plate or inside a plastic bag.
- In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, honey, kosher salt (if using), black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Stir until the honey dissolves.
- Pour the marinade over the tuna steaks. Turn to coat completely. Optional: Allow to marinate for at least 10 minutes, or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
- Heat a medium skillet on high heat. Add oil to the hot skillet.
- Sear the tuna for 1 – 1½ minutes on each side for medium rare (2 – 2½ minutes for medium-well).
- Remove the tuna to a cutting board. Slice into ½-inch pieces and serve. Garnish with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and lime wedges if desired.
Notes
To achieve the exact doneness you want, use a reliable timing method. If your stove tends to run hot, keep a close eye on the cooking process to avoid overcooking.
