Description

A comforting and flavorful shrimp and sausage gumbo that captures the essence of family gatherings and holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 lb sausage, sliced
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice for serving
  • Green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until it turns a dark brown color.
  3. Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery, cooking until the vegetables are soft.
  4. Add the sausage and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, and Cajun seasoning.
  6. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes.
  7. Add the shrimp and cook until they are pink and cooked through.
  8. Season with salt and pepper.
  9. Serve over cooked rice and garnish with green onions.

Notes

Don’t rush the roux; the darker it is, the more flavor it brings.
