Ingredients
- 1 cup stone-ground grits
- 4 cups water or broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)
- Cooked shrimp or bacon (optional)
- Maple syrup (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water or broth to a boil.
- Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the boiling liquid.
- Slowly stir in 1 cup of stone-ground grits and reduce the heat to low.
- Cook the grits, stirring frequently, until thickened (about 20-25 minutes for stone-ground grits).
- Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of shredded cheese, if using, until melted and creamy.
- Serve hot, topped with cooked shrimp, bacon, or a drizzle of maple syrup if desired.
Notes
For a more robust flavor, infuse the cooking liquid with herbs. Keep leftovers in an airtight container and reheat with a splash of liquid.
